2) During my trip I read the first of Her Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen. I liked it well enough but am curious if anyone reading this has read more books in the series and whether they recommend them? Read more... )

3) We recently had another visit from the heron. It was strolling around our end of the lake.

5) Speaking of photos, it's interesting to see all the communities on LJ which clearly have absent moderators/owners because of all the dead Photobucket links in banners, backgrounds, etc. I wanted to ask if anyone knows of active Buffy communities here on DW that I might be able to post a promo to about Top 5's Classic Recs?

Little by little we get over the hurdle, past the obstacle and little by little we make a difference. We may not have the time, the energy, the power or the ability to tackle the whole, but if we examine things carefully we can find the bit that we can do, the progress that we can make - the steps that begin the journey.

In the middle of the week, we have our anti-procrastination day. It's a great opportunity to look carefully at the things we've been avoiding starting and thinking about why we aren't getting anywhere with them. There are any number of reasons and it really doesn't matter what they are, they were good reasons before, but now is our chance to reevaluate and to begin to look for a way past them. Remember - this comm is not about having to manage to complete the whole of a task in one go, it's about finding first the way to start and then the way to continue it until we can overcome it. Tasks don't have to be daunting and beyond us, because all we're looking for at any time is the next step.

Can you think of something that you'd like to begin? Something that bit by bit you could overcome? What's today's part of that task going to be (or tomorrow's if today's is the planning stage)?

Before we get into this post, please know: I am not a Trek fan and have never been a Trek fan. I like maybe 2 characters (MAYBE) and a select few episodes from like, ALL OF STAR TREK CANON and furthermore: I've not seen most of the Star Trek canon. I also have a lot of not-necessarily-positive feelings about Star Trek FANDOM that I've been known to vent about so.

Please please ask yourself whether, knowing that, you really want to read the rest of this entry (which will contain mostly snark). Also know: if this entry isn't for you, I still love you and would never judge you (or anyone) for a single second for liking the things you like.

Anyone else going attempt NaNoWriMo this year?

For the first time in years, I am seriously planning on writing a story. I have no plot, but my main characters are loud and demanding.

I've been struggling a lot this week. Yesterday I went back to work after nearly a month away, due to holidays and travel, and that's definitely landed on me like a very heavy truck. But in general, settling back into my life after the madness that the last 6 months have been is... a little difficult and disorienting. I've had a lot of see-saw feelings of "everything is great!" and "everything is awful!" and I'm kind of constantly exhausted and my tolerance for deadline-related stress is close to zero, and well.

hi
NAME: Marina

AGE: 2017 minus 1985

INTERESTS & HOBBIES: video games (old school stuff, like Super Nintendo, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Nintendo DS, even some newer stuff like Nintendo 3DS), anything Metroid, old school Final Fantasy (like before FF7), survival horror games (early Resident Evil, Haunting Ground), I'm obsessed with purses (Coach, Vera Bradley), animals (omfg I LOVE DOGS!), books (though I have too many in my possession that I've yet to read), mathematics!! (I love all the calculi), science, anything that is the color pink, purple, or electric blue (my favorite), credit/finances (I've been in banking for 7 years), college (if I were rich, I would go back to school in a heartbeat for the rest of my life because I love learning!), languages (I'm a native speaker of Spanish and briefly tried my hand at learning Mandarin Chinese), music (I have played piano for many decades. I can read and write music. I've composed music. More than anything, I love listening to modern music that I like and playing it on the piano by ear!)
Honestly, you can head on over to my profile and view my interests if you'd like a better idea.

LOOKING FOR: People who are active and who have been on DW for a long while now. Preferably over the age of 21, though I'm not terribly picky as long as you're over the age of 18.

ANYTHING ELSE?: Not interested in drug use of any kind. Listen, I go to a lot of raves and music festivals often because I like having fun like anyone else. But I do it mostly sober, 'cause honestly? Fuck drugs. I hate what it does to people. If you do it, cool, but it's definitely not my cup of tea. I'm also not particularly interested in reading about religion or politics. Or rather, I'll read about it passively to learn more about it, but don't come to me looking for a debate or argument. Don't try to recruit me or convince me any which way. I'm not about that. If you need to know, before adding me- I'm an irreligious Deist who is against organized religion but still believes in a god or higher power (and karma) as well as anything backed by SCIENCE. I'm a disgruntled millennial who hated Trump but didn't like Hillary, because I was definitely Feeling the Bern, and now I'm disappointed that I can't buy a house because of avocado toast, and yes Global Warming is fucking real. So now that that's out of the way, you can make your own decision on whether or not we'll butt heads or get along. But to be honest, I rarely discuss any politics or religion in my journal. Usually I write about work, friends, or other personal life events. I pretty much treat my journal like a personal diary. But be forewarned: I curse. A LOT. Because I'm honest, blunt, and passionate. To quote, "I do not spew profanities. I enunciate them clearly, like a fucking lady."

ALSO KNOWN AS: Well, I was on LiveJournal from 2002 until recently, but I hate them and won't accept their new ToS. So that's that. RIP LJ. I joined DreamWidth back in 2010 and never looked back! I'm very happy here with my friends, and look forward to meeting new ones!

1) So hello, I'm back from my trip! ::waves:: I didn't take a whole lot of photos this time but do have a few to share. Read more... )

2) This is rather late now but a side benefit to having a romance-only bookstore is that the owners have a additional incentive to research the stats on romances written by POC.

3) Every piece of software needs to have a giant undo option somewhere. It seems like stuff is constantly crammed into software that maybe 50 people across the globe actually use regularly and everyone else is stymied or tripped up by it. I was typing away on an email, three paragraphs in and I've no idea what a finger hit but suddenly the entire text just vanished. I thought maybe it had somehow been cut by accident but when I tried paste, nope, not there. ARGH!

4) For the probably 2 people actually reading any of my dissertation deleted scenes, here's another bit to share. On a section about conceptual frameworks, the following was cut because it got discussed in a later chapter. But this example described a way of interpreting interactions within the group.
